So, last night WWIII started and ended. I found out about it this morning.
A couple of years ago I met a well-educated middle-aged couple at a sushi bar. We had a good conversation. As they got up to leave the wife let it drop that had retired early and had been careful with their money, but with the election of Donald Trump they decided to spend it all since the world was going to end thanks to Trump’s brinkmanship with North Korea.
A smart and successful couple was counting on North Korea to nuke Salem MA so it didn’t matter if they blew all their money.
I’m usually good at hiding surprise so I just said “Eh, I don’t think things will be as bad as all that. I don’t like Trump but don’t hate him either. I try not to let him bother me.”
The current hysteria about Iran’s response to the targeted killing of Solemani does not take into account any realistic analysis of the political situation. It only takes into account people’s mistrust of Donald Trump. The logic is not that Iran has the allies or capacity to start a war with the United States, or even that the United States might bumble into a renewal of the regional war, but that Donald Trump has the unique capacity to ignite a World War in spite of the all odds against it.
