Less Religion = Less Tolerance?

I’m always paraphrasing Orwell and saying that the future will be an Alt-right Trump supporter and a sweaty obese college feminist, screaming in your face, forever.

There is an article in The Atlantic that mostly agrees: the rise of Trump corresponds closely to the dropping church-affiliation of Republicans. The rise of dumb-ass campus leftism (the author concentrates on BLM but he could be talking about the lefty violence and anti-free speech movements) corresponds to the drop in church-affiliation among Democrats. The politics of today is more vicious because there is less faith:

As Americans have left organized religion they haven’t stopped viewing politics as a struggle between “us” and “them”. Many have come to define “us” and “them” in even more primal and irreconcilable ways.

Someone once said that when fascism came to America it would be waving a cross and flag: events are proving that guy was an idiot.

I doubt we really understand the ugly cultural forces that are lurking here. You can’t really predict the future, but never underestimate human stupidity.

  1. Your opening sentence is hilarious and frightening at the same time! And probably true. There’s an interesting article at The Gospel Coalition talking about how modern day tolerance is actually never encouraged in the Bible… and how Biblically illiterate Christians have gotten it all mixed up. Thanks for sharing
